Why some aren’t getting the winter fuel payment

The Express published an article on the Department for Work and Pensions’ explanation for some individuals not receiving the winter fuel payment.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) outlined four reasons why some people may not receive the Winter Fuel Payment (WFP) this year, even if they believe they are eligible:

  1. Living in Scotland: The WFP is unavailable to pensioners in Scotland. Instead, they can apply for the Winter Heating Payment of £58.75, starting December 2024.
  2. Care Home Residents: Those residing in a care home for the entire period from June 24 to September 22, 2024, are not eligible.
  3. Hospitalization: Those hospitalized for free treatment for over a year.
  4. Incarceration: People incarcerated for the entire qualifying week of September 16-22, 2024.

The payment is only guaranteed for those on Pension Credit and specific other benefits, but these exclusions still apply regardless of benefit status. Eligible Scottish residents living abroad might still receive the WFP if they meet additional criteria. The deadline for claiming is December 2, with backdating options.

Millions of struggling pensioners won’t receive up to £300 they rely on to pay their bills.

The Government should halt their proposed change to the Winter Fuel Payment and think again.
