Update: Age Discrimination Legislation in Northern Ireland

The Northern Ireland Brach had a motion carried, unanimously, at the CSPA National AGM in 2022. Relating to the lack of Age Discrimination legislation for Older People to access in Northern Ireland, unlike the situation in England, Scotland and Wales.

On 13 Feb 2024, The General Secretary wrote to NI Minister of Justice, Naomi Long, to congratulate her on her appointment and to raise CSPA members’ concerns around the lack of legislative protection against Age Discrimination in Northern Ireland.

At a Virtual Meeting of the Northern Ireland Assembly All Party Group this week, on which Tony McMullan represents CSPA NI, the All Party Group Chair, Claire Sugden MLA ( Independent – East Londonderry ) notified the meeting that she would be tabling a Private Members Bill to establish the legislation in Northern Ireland.

“As the CSPA representative on the Northern Ireland Assembly All Party Group on Older People I was delighted to hear Claire Sugden’s announcement. We will be lobbying every Political Party in the Assembly to urge them to support Claire’s Private Member’s Motion. It’s about time that Northern Ireland Pensioners had the same legal protections that Pensioners in England, Scotland and Wales have enjoyed for many years “

“We, at CSPA, very much welcome Claire Sugden MLA’s recent announcement, and look forward to the tabling of the proposed Private Members Bill to protect our members, and other older people, in Northern Ireland against discrimination on the basis of their age.”
