The Times have published* an article on a new shingles jab that can delay onset of dementia.
A study by Oxford University involving over 200,000 people found that the Shingrix vaccine, offered to those over 65 on the NHS, can delay the onset of dementia by up to nine months, or 17%.
Introduced in the US in 2017, Shingrix showed a significantly lower risk of dementia six years post-vaccination compared to its predecessor, Zostavax.
Women benefited more than men. Researchers suggest the vaccine’s prevention of herpes virus reactivation or its adjuvants might explain the protective effect. However, further research is needed to confirm these findings and understand the mechanisms involved.
