Jumping through hoops: Reducing the complexity of the social security system for older people
The UK’s social security system is a vital safety net for people in later life. Unfortunately, many older people don’t receive this support, despite being eligible and in desperate need of it.
Research by Independent Age highlights one of the reasons for this: the complexity of the social security system in the UK is preventing many older people from receiving all the money they are entitled to.
The report explores the complexities of the social security system after State Pension age, drawing on research with specialist advisers and older people who have used Independent Age’s services. We identify a number of aspects of the system which could be improved in order to increase take-up of financial entitlements.
Informed by these findings, Ithey are calling on the UK Government to develop a take-up strategy for all social security entitlements. This should include a commitment to increasing take-up, target take-up levels, and a range of tangible actions to address barriers to take-up, including reducing the complexity of the system.
