In an attempt to force a vote on an entirely elected upper chamber, the Liberal Democrats will look to hijack the Government’s Hereditary Peers Bill in Parliament this week. The Bill will ban the current 92 Lords who inherited their titles from sitting in the second chamber and put an end to the tradition. It is likely to clear the House of Commons on Tuesday after its Committee Stage as MPs are expected to vote overwhelmingly in favour of the legislation, however, the Liberal Democrats plan to amend the Bill in favour of bringing in a totally elected second chamber.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is set to join French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris for Armistice Day events. Talks are expected to centre around European security and the impact of Trump being elected on Nato and US support for Ukraine. They are also expected to discuss the ongoing humanitarian situation in Gaza. Starmer is believed to be the first British leader to attend the ceremony on the Champs Elysee since Winston Churchill in 1944 and will also meet French Prime Minister Michel Barnier.
Recent spells of low wind and sun have reduced output from renewables and put pressure on the reliance for gas ahead of the COP29 conference.
According to Met Office forecasters, much of the UK has seen little to zero hours of sun this month, with this week expected to see already-light wind speeds hitting new lows. The forecast comes as the UK delegation prepares to attend the COP29 conference in Azerbaijan, where Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and the Prime Minister will pledge further cuts in greenhouse gas emissions and reaffirm the UK’s commitment to renewable energy generation.
