Moving home
How well does your home meet your needs? Perhaps you’re considering a move to somewhere smaller or easier to run. Or maybe you’d benefit from some home adaptations.
Whether you’re renting or own your home, Independent Age’s advice pages can help you to consider all your options. If you do decide to move, they also have advice on managing the costs and logistics of moving, and where to get support.
Adapting your home
If you don’t want to move, you may want to consider making some adaptations to your home so you can continue to live there independently. Sometimes a small adaptation can make a big difference. You can get support to work out what you need and may be able to get help with costs.
Independent Age’s advice page explains the different kinds of adaptations and support you can get from your council. It covers:
- what kind of adaptations are available and what they cost
- grants from your council, who can qualify and how to apply
- other help to pay for adaptations.
Paying for repairs
Whether you’re a private, council or housing association tenant, your landlord has certain responsibilities for maintaining your home and carrying out repairs.
Independent Age’s advice page Maintenance and repairs if you’re a tenant | Independent Age explains which repairs landlords are responsible for and where to get help if they don’t carry them out.
Home insurance
If you own your home, our advice page Shopping around for insurance | Independent Age can help you find the right buildings and contents insurance for your home. When you buy or renew your home insurance policy, base your decision on the cover provided, not just the price.
If you’re renting, you likely don’t need buildings cover but you may want to consider taking out contents insurance.
